Is it just me or does everyone think some events deserve to be a sell out?
It’s June and that means we are raising money for Mix FM’s Give Me Five for Kids, so feel free to tap out, I am definitely going to ask for something.
I am wondering if you would consider buying a table to our Protector Aluminium Ladies Lunch on Friday June 14? Not even a table, just a ticket or two.
The lunch is happening in the Mudjimba Room at Novotel Twin Waters Resort and our special guest is Ben Roberts-Smith, VC MG.
Ben Roberts-Smith received the Victoria Cross for Australia, the highest military honour, for his conspicuous gallantry in circumstances of extreme peril during an engagement in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan in June 2010.
In short, Corporal Roberts-Smith made two life and death decisions that day. First he acted to draw the Taliban’s fire toward himself, allowing his patrol to get the break they needed to take down an enemy machine gun. Following that, he stormed the two remaining machine gunners, somehow managing to kill them before they killed him.
He is the most decorated modern Australian soldier, wearing the Medal for Gallantry for courage and devotion to duty on another operation in Afghanistan four years earlier.
Ben Roberts-Smith joined the army in 1996 when he was just 17. Growing up in Perth he had always been keen on the Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment based at Swanbourne Barracks. From his day of enlistment Ben worked tirelessly and eventually joined the SAS in 2003.
Only one other solder has received the Victoria Cross for Australia and the Medal for Gallantry, Corporal Cameron Baird, who was awarded his VC posthumously.
Ben Roberts-Smith is going to tell us his story at the lunch. He’s a father and now a businessman, running the Seven Network Queensland from here on the coast.
I have read a lot about him this week and he has a lot to teach us. Because Ben Roberts-Smith has faced tougher questions than most.
I think he has only spoken once or twice on the coast and I know you couldn’t hear a pin drop.
He’s coming to our lunch for free because he personally knows families who spend time in the childrens’ ward and he believes in Give Me Five for Kids.
I know it’s called the Ladies Lunch, but the name is meaningless, we have always invited blokes and more than usual are already booked in for this one, so come one, come all.
And if the name Ladies Lunch puts you off, remember the speaker holds the VC, nothing scares him.
