SCARS Paws for a Cause!

The Paws for a Cause Long Lunch is an annual fundraising event hosted by the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society (SCARS). In 2025, the event will take place on Saturday, 10 May, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Buderim War Memorial Community Association (BWMCA) Memorial Hall in Buderim, Queensland.

Now in its seventh year, this event offers a three-course catered lunch in a picturesque park setting. Guests will have the opportunity to meet some of SCARS’ rescue animals, including dogs and kittens, who will be present as special guests.

Proceeds from the Long Lunch support SCARS’ mission to provide care and find permanent homes for abandoned, abused, stray, and unwanted cats and dogs. The funds raised contribute to veterinary care, shelter, and other essential services for these animals.

About The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS):

The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS), officially known as the Sippy Creek Animal Refuge Society Inc, is a non-profit, independent animal welfare organization based in Tanawha, Queensland. Established in 1979, SCARS is dedicated to providing temporary shelter and finding permanent homes for abandoned, abused, stray, and unwanted cats and dogs.

The refuge operates under a strictly regulated non-euthanasia policy, ensuring that all animals receive care until they are adopted.

Located on a 1.08-hectare site adjacent to the Sunshine Coast Council Pound, SCARS can accommodate approximately 50 dogs and 50 cats at any given time. Animals admitted to the refuge undergo comprehensive veterinary care, including health checks, vaccinations, worming, desexing, microchipping, and any necessary medical treatments before being made available for adoption.

SCARS is managed by an unpaid, elected committee and relies heavily on a small team of staff and a large group of dedicated volunteers. The organization depends on support from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, local businesses, community groups, and individual donors to sustain its operations. In addition to rehoming animals, SCARS runs educational programs to promote responsible pet ownership within the community.
