I have not been this sad since Sex And The City came to an end
You see I have the blues over Game Of Thrones ending. I know. I know. It’s a just a TV show and the critics say it is riddled with over-the-top violent and gratuitous scenes. But for the past 8 years it has been a constant in my life.
Each week it has been a solid date with my husband and I on a Monday night. We have pretty much been parents and married for that exact amount of time and there is definitely a correlation between the two relationships. No matter how tired we have been as parents to new borns, we have sat down together on a couch with excitement to watch the next episode.
No matter what life has thrown at us good and bad we have poured a wine and bonded over dragons and dragon scenes. We have gained grey hairs and a dress size or two and our kids have grown up but GOT was there for the journey. And the characters. Wow. Jon Snow is the quintessential good guy who never let me down. The Mother of Dragons was relatable despite her perfectly pert bosom because she went through ordeals that women have gone through since the beginning of time.
Then there is Tyrion Lannister, a dwarf with the sharpest mind and kindest heart, who I think is my favourite character. I have always loved an underdog and I have always had such compassion for his life journey when he doesn’t fit what our world tells us we are ‘meant’ to look like. But then there is Sansa Stark who I have watched grow up from a young girl to a total powerhouse of a woman not to be messed with.
I will grieve the show being finished and I will grieve no longer checking in with my screen friends each week and no longer having date night at home. I have been reading a lot of David Gillespie’s Teen Brain book. It is a must read if you have kids of any age who like to use your phone or I-pad. So this is pretty much every kid in Australia. The author talks about how we do not have to wait a whole week anymore for the next episode of our favourite shows. Thanks to Netflix and screens we can binge on entire seasons at once.
Teens are addicted to that adrenalin hit that comes with watching the next episode of a show on Youtube and do not have to learn to control those desires. Remember in the old days we would wait for A Country Practice to come on our screens to watch Molly and Brendan battle the world. Then we grew up a little (we thought a lot) and Monday nights rocked because Friends screened and it was appointment TV.
Sex And The City was my favourite show and I would count down the days and then the hours to see what fabulously whacky outfit Carrie Bradshaw was wearing. I am not sure I will ever have a show again as gripping as my past screen loves.
It is the way of the world we expect and get instant gratification. So if you have any shows you can recommend throw this old duck an email at sami.muirhead@eongroup.com.au. Until then I will be crying over Jon Snow ditching me forever.
