SAMI’S BLOG: Freezer
Home »You know you can tell a lot about someone from what is in their freezer. You see, freezer drawers and shelves are secret time capsules that reflect the real life we are living.
Stop laughing and keep reading!
In just 12 short months, my freezer has had a few changes of tenants. It is now a base for bait. My 12-year-old has taken up fishing and is throwing out the frozen peas to make way for his prawn guts. He was leaving the bait around the house in a true pre-teen state of forgetfulness and let me tell you, there is no worse smell than warm bait. Nothing. Excuse me while I do a small vomit in my mouth.
The second new thing in my fridge these days, are plenty of frozen meals. Each meal of leftovers is frozen for my 83-year-old Mum who is struggling to cook for herself these days. A decade ago, it was frozen cabbage leaves for sore, milk-feeding breasts and pureed pumpkin for the newborn babies. The circle of life is always evident in your freezer.
My Kelvinator always has vanilla ice cream and an emergency bottle of vodka. And probably far too many filled ice trays in ratio to sensible things such as protein and frozen vegetables. The ice is not for ankle sprains or head wounds. No. it is for Mum’s Magic Margaritas. They are magic because they are strong. The kids know to refill mum’s ice trays or she goes Beast Mode as they call it.
My freezer still has a few of those colour-changing toy cars my 10-year-old plays with and I like this because I am hanging on to my baby even though he is growing up way too fast. My 13-year-old stashes aloe vera leaves in the freezer for sunburn on her perfect skin. My sister stashed a dead cane toad in there a month ago while her fridge was broken. She always keeps cane toads in her freezer as she is a science teacher. Apparently if the students are good, their reward is a dissection of the dead toad. I would hate to see what they get if they are bad.
May 2025 bring you much joy and a freezer that serves you well in the circle of life.
